The cover of the book makes you feel that the story is about visiting a cold country where snowfall is occurring. But of course the story is about crime: cold, brutal crime. The book is a real page turner right from the first to the last line! When Sheriff Jeff McQuede discovers the frozen body of a woman inside her car he suspects that it could be more than a mere case of being frozen to death, and rightly so. Here in comes plenty of plot twists and turns which keep you engaged. The plot is somewhat complicated so I would suggest that you focus all your attention on the story otherwise you might lose your way like I did! The characters, both the good and the bad guys, are real people with real emotions you can relate to and not caricatures (“For the first time, he showed a hint of regret”).The dialogs are realistic with an occasional dose of humor which thankfully livens up an otherwise dark plot:
“Ha! I saved your life. You saved mine. Double-chums, I’d say.”
After a while, Sammy removed the glasses and met McQuede’s smile with twinkling, dark eyes. “I know something you don’t.”
“I doubt it.”
“I know you’re going to do all you can to find out who set up my pal, Ruger.”
“How do you know this?”
“All my observations…” Sammy began.
“…are made across a poker table,” McQuede finished
Or this:
McQuede shook his head. “Don’t you ever eat real food?”
“I’m trying to stay fit and healthy. You should try it sometime.”
If you are a fan of crime fiction and are tired of the run-of-the-mill crime stories then this book would definitely prove to be a treat for you. I would say, go for it! This is a real thriller in the true sense of the term.
